Osteopathy

Osteopathy is a hands on therapy. With a deep understanding of the musculoskeletal system, osteopaths have the potential to recognise and diagnose the many complex factors contributing to a person's symptoms. Using that knowledge, an osteopath can treat appropriately.

Osteopathy can help with:

• muscle tension & pain
• back and neck pain
• sciatica
• hip, knee, leg & foot pain
• shoulder, elbow & hand problems
• arthritic pain and joint stiffness
• treatment and rehabilitation after minor sports injuries
• musculo-skeletal rehabilitation after stroke
• pregnancy and post natal related problems
• carpal tunnel syndrome

As well as relieving pain, osteopathy can be deeply nurturing and help your emotional and psychological well being. Many people use osteopathy to help maintain optimal health.

At the first session you will be asked about yourself - including your medical history and any current symptoms you may have - in order to see what is the best treatment approach for you. You may also be asked to carry out simple movements, and do other tests to help the osteopath get a sense of what is going on.
An osteopathic assessment includes an awareness of how the person's body is functioning mechanically, and of the importance of the musculoskeletal system to that person's overall health.

Osteopathy works with many different approaches according to what the individual needs - for example soft tissue work (similar to massage); cranial work (gentle holding techniques, focussing particularly on the subtle energy of the client); rhythmical movement and rocking techniques; high velocity thrusts which induces a rapid movement through identified joints.

As a clinical practice, osteopathy has longstanding historical roots. The term 'osteopathy' was initially used by Dr. Still, a deeply spiritual man , who in the late 1800s, dedicated himself to finding safer and more effective medical treatment methods than those popular in his time.
Osteopathy has evolved since those times, and now aims to integrate the best of its holistic roots with relevant current research.
