The Counselling + Psychotherapy Service

The Counselling and Psychotherapy Service provides long and short-term low-cost individual counselling and psychotherapy and a range of groups for women who live in the London Borough of Camden.

Who we are

We have two part-time members of staff who manage the service and approximately 40 volunteer counsellors/therapists, a third of whom are final-year trainees. The rest are qualified and experienced practitioners.

All counsellors/therapists are supervised and insured. All work within BACP/UKCP code of ethics and standards of practice.

Models of counselling/therapy practised include: Gestalt, Person-Centred/Humanistic, Psychodynamic, Psycho-Analytic, Psycho-Synthesis, Relational, Cognitive-Behavioural, Existential and Transpersonal.

What is psychotherapy and counselling?

Generally psychotherapy refers to longer term work and is in greater depth; counselling is shorter and more focussed. We use the terms interchangeably. At Women + Health we offer up to two years weekly counselling and sometimes longer psychotherapy depending on the client's needs.

Counselling is a way of exploring your concerns and feelings with a counsellor who will listen attentively in an accepting, non-judgemental way in a safe and confidential setting.

She will help you to understand yourself better and why you think, behave and feel as you do; to find your strengths and build on them. What starts out as a problem can often become the turning point towards self-discovery.

Counselling is not giving advice, but may enable you to make choices and changes in your life, to do what feels right for you.

Who is it for?

Counselling or psychotherapy can be helpful:

• For women over 16 of any race, class, cultural background or sexual preference

• For women who are troubled by the stress in their lives and want to explore ways to make changes

• For women who have experienced domestic violence or abuse in childhood or adolescence - physical, emotional and sexual

• For women who feel lonely, depressed, bereaved, confused, angry or overwhelmed by the demands of others

• For women who are having problems with relationships

• For women who plan to have children and want to explore their own family dynamics in order not to repeat harmful patterns

• For women who want to address their drug and alcohol use

• For women who experience anxiety and panic attacks

• And for women who just want to talk...

Making contact with us

If you wish to have counselling or psychotherapy, please fill in and send us the form below. We will then arrange an interview, which will be a chance for you to think about what you need and how we can help you.

Following the interview your name will be put on a waiting list until there is a vacancy with one of our counsellors. This time can vary between 4-12 weeks. Counselling sessions are usually weekly and last 50mins.

At the beginning and end of your counselling you will be asked to fill out a simple questionnaire for monitoring purposes. This is for us to see how the counselling has helped you and if necessary to see how we can improve our service. It will be anonymous.

What does it cost?

Women + Health operate a sliding scale of £5 - £30 per session depending on your personal circumstances.

Counselling service is only available for LB Camden residents

Client Comments

"It was the openness, the warmth, the involvement - I could say anything and did!"

"To be listened to and not judged and criticised....to think things out yourself with help from your counsellor."

Please Note...

Due to unprecedented demand for our services, we are having to close our waiting list for counselling temporarily. We are hoping to re-open the waiting list again in September 2010.
